About Birmingham City Council

General domestic refuse

We collect refuse from domestic properties on the same day once a week. Collections happen every day, Monday to Friday, except Christmas Day and Boxing Day in which case collections will take place the following week. Every six months we give each house a roll of 26 refuse sacks, free of charge. Tower blocks and other multi-occupied homes might be provided with large containers instead of refuse sacks. We empty these at least once a week, more frequently if necessary.

Recycling

We collect:

Paper and card from your blue box, every fortnight

Glass, bottles and jars, food and drinks cans and plastic bottles from your green box, every fortnight

Green sacks containing garden waste on alternate weeks to the above.

If you don’t currently have a doorstep collection of garden waste, we can collect up to two black bags of burnable garden waste (not soil or rubble) with your general domestic refuse.

Commercial Waste

Birmingham Commercial Waste Services, as part of Birmingham City Council, are committed to helping you to reduce the amount of waste you produce.

Wholly owned and run by Birmingham City Council, the largest authority in the country, our aim is to provide you with a quality, reliable service at a fixed cost.

So unlike other commercial waste providers we do not exist to make a profit from our services. We will provide you with a guaranteed fixed price and service that is tailored to your individual requirements.

Unlike other organisations we do not charge for Duty of Care Notices and do not have additional hidden cots, such as the cost of the bin - the price you see is all that you pay. Payment is by quarterly direct debit, so you know how much you are spending on your waste each year.

We do not lock our customers into lengthy contracts; all we require is 3 months written notice and for customers who only produce a small amount of waste, we have a pre-paid sack service so you only need pay for the sacks you actually use.

We do not charge VAT on our services - another advantage of using Birmingham Commercial Waste Services.

By incinerating all our waste at our Energy from Waste facility in the city,w e offer all businesses in Birmingham a "zero to landfill" collection service which satisfies all environmental accreditations and creates local jobs for local people.

Clinical Waste

If you have medical treatment at home and need to dispose of clinical waste, we will collect it for free. It is usually arranged after a referral by your hospital, health visitor, GP, district nurse or home care assistant and you can also arrange it direct with us.

We can also collect clinical waste from commercial premises such as GP and dental surgeries, private clinics, nursing homes, nurseries, tattooists and the police. How ever we will make a charge for this service.
